Show, don’t tell: online dating lessons from television execs

17 September 2009 No Comment

I just got back from a reality and documentary conference
in Santa Monica–three days full of producers pitching their “amazing”
works of art to major network executives. The one thing the network
executives kept driving home was how important it is to illustrate
rather than just describe something.

Due to the nature of most online dating sites, instead of video
footage you will have to illustrate your points using effectively
chosen photographs and text. For example, you mention that you love to
travel, well, now is the time to upload those pictures of you
traveling on a camel in Egypt. You mention that you love to cook, well
now is a time to describe in mouth-watering detail that last amazing
meal you created.

The reader wants to imagine what it might have been
like to have that experience with you. Ultimately you want the person
to feel like life with you would feel pretty great, but the first step
is in giving the person a taste of what your life feels like. The
person will want to contact you because they want to be included in
the scene you just created.
